Tornadic Changes of Life -- How to Embrace: Change

The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails. —William Arthur Ward

It is in the air. Soft cool warm breeze and the sun shining its warmth, like a virtual blanket making you feel safe. Flowers and trees are blooming. The earth dawns its wonderful colorful robe and shedding the deadness of slumber. Spring is here. There are signs buzzing around you to awaken you to a new day. It is a renewal of the spirit to enjoy something new. It plays back to my memories of running through the fields of Texas in the bluebonnets. Spring is the hope that says life does exist and it’s time for a refreshing change from being drift asleep under the blankets of white snow.

All highways were blocked today.  I had to divert my way through city streets and housing to stay on track for my appointment. I had to see my patient and his family by 5pm for their family therapy session. A major storm was coming. Lightening was striking above me and rain drops started to fall around me. It occurred to me that although the storm was causing me to divert from my normal routine and for me to make it on time, I had to change.

Arriving to the office it was down pouring. My cell phone was going off with storm related texts to take cover, like I hit the lotto. It could have been an anxious moment, but I was focused on task in meeting with the family. Therapy started on time, even though there were many changes that had to be made. During therapy the tornado sirens were going off and other patients were in the hallways as we sat in the office. Occasionally, we monitored the radar on the computer screen and we continued with therapy.

Change can be scary. However, you change your clothes, your shoes, your purses, your looks and even diapers. Granted changing diapers can be scary because you never know if it will be a smelly blow out. I’ve changed a few of those diapers when my children were babies. You may have anxiety because of the idea of change. You may have anxiety because you are forced to change due to death or even by destruction of weather events.

There are some who want to change their habits. Some will go to the extent of losing weight. Great! However, they desire the comfort food of soft drinks, cakes and they say they eat in moderation. However, they slowly gain the weight back due to lack of exercise and the resistance to change. Then they are unhappy with how they look and repeat the cycle of losing weight again. They ask for people to help them, but without the change in what they put inside them, it will not help change the overall appearance. Low self-esteem kicks in and it affects those around them. People who truly care about them are pushed away as the ones who are critical and judgmental.

Helping others to change does not work unless the one receiving the help is willing to change. It starts with an open mind. Change moves us outside our comfort box. There are some of you reading this message and understand of holding onto the familiarity and resist change because it strengthens the soul and mind. The thought of exercise may associate with the aches and pains and therefore we become resistant because it is the path to least resistance.

We are unable to control every characteristic of our lives and change, like the four seasons, cannot be stopped from happening. We embrace spring, summer, fall and sometimes winter, but it is how we respond to change that will significantly influence our overall experiences in our life.

In the bible (Genesis 17) there is a story about Abraham and Sarah. God promised them a son (Isaac) would be born to them. “Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing”. Abraham and Sarah were both resistant to change. Abraham laughed at the change, but Sarah laughed and lied that she laughed about it. God’s promises were steadfast and they had their son. Change was made and because their acceptance to change, thousands of years later our Savior of the world was born.

A change in cars, houses, relationships, jobs and our personal self, can help or hurt us. How can we accept change? It’s easy to “change” a dollar bill into four quarters, but change in our life can be challenging. Change does result in an exercise of the mind. It is work.

First, do not be complacent and not wanting to change because you are custom to the familiarity. When you are resistant to change then suffering occurs to what is already happening in your life. Instead of manipulating the situation and praying things would be different, go with the flow and adapt to the change.

Second, do mediation and self-reflect. Prayer helps prepare you for the changes already taking place in your life. Write down the pros and cons. Evaluate and seek out the truth if the change you are experiencing can be an easy transition or write out a plan to learn how to go around those obstacles you are facing.

Finally, stay focused on the final outcome. A major event was taking place that could have hindered me, caused anxiety, but I remained focused. In the gospels there was a paralytic man at the Pool of Bethsaida. He was there 30 plus years waiting to be healed. Yet, he was the only man out of all the miracles that Jesus asked, “Do you want to be healed.” Sometimes we need to be asked that question. Jesus knew the answer, but sometimes we have to be awakened to reality of yes, I want to be healed. He lost focus as to his purpose and intent. Sure, there were changes happening all around him and he became complacent.

Change is never easy because we don’t want to do things that are different from “normal”. I always say there is nothing normal except the setting on the dryer. The primary key to accepting and going through any type of change is through prayer.

Prayer allows the ability to express your thoughts and praying to the Creator to allow doors of opportunities to happen or to help you in the changes, which are already taking place in your life. The only way to improve your life is to force yourself to undergo the challenge to do things differently than what you are accustomed to. Change promotes growth.

Many times, the only way to improve our lives is to force ourselves to undergo difficult change. Develop the courage to endure the change because it increases your knowledge and then you gain wisdom through the experience. Reflect back through the time of change to make sure you’re not developing unhealthy patterns through poor relationships. It appears when one is accustomed to being in a nonfunctional relationship to remain in it because it is the “norm”. You become the paralytic in the situation even though you want to make the change.

“Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I’ll try again tomorrow.” – Mary Anne Radmacher

Make the change and develop a healthy pattern of creating better self-esteem. Unwrap yourself from the “wintery” cocoon.  Embrace yourself through your struggle as you emerge and “spring” forth with energy by embracing the change. Never “fall” back to old unhealthy patterns. Soon, like “summer”, you can enjoy the sunshine of surviving your change. Wisdom grows by making the change by accepting the four seasons of your life.  Stay focused and don’t let the storms frighten you, while you adapt to overcoming the obstacles that may challenge your thinking.

Humpty Dumpty - It's Okay to Feel Broken

“Life always waits for some crisis to occur before revealing itself at its most brilliant.” ~Paul Coelho.

I was reaching into the fridge to pull out a corning ware bowl; I bumped my elbow, and lost the bowl. There was shredded glass all over the stone floor. If Humpty Dumpty was an egg, then how did all the kings’ men put him back together again? There was no way of putting a 1,000 piece corning ware bowl back together again.  Luckily, no cuts when sweeping up the mess and tossing it away.

Do you feel you are in a mess? Life happens and it seems like everything falls to pieces. It is a challenge to figure out what piece to start with and to move into a zone of being focused on putting it all back together. Maybe people give up on you and shut you out of their life because they don't like the positive changes you have made.

Life can be challenging. Picking up the pieces to start over is difficult. There are some who will never forgive the wrong they have been done to them. There are some who want the control and will hold the past over your head. Therefore, why subject yourself to unhealthy people and their thinking when there are positive changes of moving forward with improvements in your life?

I find it interesting that some people go to work and don’t smile. Some go to worship with a smile, but life is a mess. Most do not want others to know what is going on in their life without the fear of rejection. We live in a culture where perfection is to be obtained. Don’t believe me? Then why are there so many commercials on beauty that focuses on skin, weight, hair or other parts of the body? Why do commercials state the following: “buy our product” and see the enhancement of your life?

We tend to run, when we should stand still. In our culture, men have been told not to cry and suck it up and move on. This is not healthy for anyone to not shed a tear and be emotional. When we are faced with dilemma and we fall to our knees praying, it is time to realize it is okay to be broken or to feel okay to be not okay.

“Hope is the feeling that the feeling you have isn’t permanent.” ~Jean Kerr

Sometimes we allow our life to be run by others and what others think of us. We let our life be ran by a meaning of “instead”.  Instead of ending an unhealthy relationship most will stay and avoid confrontation to experience a sense of control. Instead of leaving a demanding endless job to find a new one, we stay and complain about it. Instead of dealing with the feelings we minimize the pain and accept it as the reality.

It is okay to accept the fact you are broken and in a not okay state. It doesn’t mean you are a mess and you are to be thrown away. How do you “glue” yourself back to a “normal state”?  Give yourself the permission to be broken and from there you can be made whole again.

How?

“Change the way you look at things and the things you look at will change.” ~Wayne Dyer

First, learn to accept your life as it is right now. It doesn’t matter the situation and look at it as areas of prospects of growth. Accept your mistakes, then let go by forgiving yourself by relinquishing your fears, stress and those who may blame you or try to control you by holding the past over you. Mediation helps clear the mind and negativity and recreates a renewing of your mind to focus on the positive.

Second, set your emotions aside and become a Star Trek “Spock” and become analytical for a moment. Observe your situation and create a plan of action, but not reaction. Learn to develop an honest look at your reactions. Do you jump to conclusions? Do you feel you need approval? Do you feel you have to please others?

Finally, I had to learn God uses broken people. Regardless of your relationships, mistakes you done in your past, or those who want to confine you to your mistakes, it’s time for a change. Discover ways to take responsibility for your joy. We may not be able to minimize the feelings of brokenness, but we can pick different things to have a basis of enjoyment, for ourselves and those around us. Accept it is okay not to be okay and sometimes we need to feel broken in order to recreate ourselves into a better place and situation. Leave behind those who will ridicule you. Leave behind those who do not mentally supply you with a sense of healthiness.

Like a butterfly, emerge from the cocoon you have gently wrapped yourself up in and begin to fly with new energy. Surround yourself with those who are positive and will encourage you and not attack you. Develop a sense of healthiness by creating new healthy boundaries which are productive to help you reach your goal.

By putting my faith on His anvil it was a challenge in my life. I made plenty of mistakes. My brokenness and mistakes are no different from yours and vice versa. Therefore, we need to pull ourselves together and realize we can make a difference by using our broken lives to fit into the puzzle of life. I admire artists that take broken dishes to create a beautiful master piece. You may not look like the original dish, but now you are a piece of art work for others to admire.

The Gift Of Life

God gave us the gift of life; it is up to us to give ourselves the gift of living well.--Voltaire

Yesterday is the torn wrapping paper. Today is the present. Therefore, today is today’s gift:

Remember before you utter a word – someone can’t speak.

Remember before you begin to eat – someone is hungry.

Remember before complaining about your spouse – someone lost theirs.

Remember before complaining about your parents – someone doesn’t have theirs.

Remember before complaining about your children – some have never had the pleasure having their own.

Remember before complaining about your job – there are some who are homeless without money.

Remember before you drive – there are some who have to walk.

Remember before you clean your house – someone doesn’t have one.

Tomorrow is a gift not opened. What you do with today’s present will determine the biggest gift given:

LIFE- live it, share it, enjoy it, embrace it.

We cannot change the past. We can change the future by embracing our past, forgiving our self and others. Your life can only be journeyed once. Become aware of how you think. Don’t worry about the future or this year and what is to come. When making a New Year's resolution do some deep thinking. Set yourself up for success by embracing change as hard as it maybe. If it is too hard then simplify what your desired goal.

Maybe look at something different to do than in recent pasts. What can I do to contribute to society and those around me? What could I do better to reach out to those who are hurting? Life is different when the focus is on others. Life... It's a gift! Ready to give?

May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Thess. 5:23).

Happy New Year!

The Gift - Reconcile

“Life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by becoming more” – Anthony Robbins

He was a very sick boy; lying there in the hospital with eyes closed. The boy’s parents stood nearby with his mother on one side and his father on the other side of the bed. His mother’s hair seemed to be unkempt from restless night of sleep by the boy’s bed. White tissue crumbled in her hand and a slow motion to capture every tear that flowed from her eyes. The father was dumbfounded and angry and didn’t know how to handle her or his emotions.

You see this story may be sad. Perhaps you could relate to them and their emotions. Ever had a painful moment? I lost my mentor in 1999. My grandfather was a great Christian example for me. There wasn’t a day and it was confirmed by my grandmother, that he didn’t read his bible. It was painful to see a man full of life, now gone lying motionless in a casket.

The boy’s parents were with their son because he had a rare disease. He was only 11 years old. His parents usually fought about the finances because of hospital bills. They would argue about the boy's care. Communication between them wasn’t the greatest. Yet, both stood firm. They both loved their son very much and it was too much pain for them to bear.

Mom’s face was down on the bedside praying, “Please God just one more day.” The boy’s father was pacing the floor trying to figure out how he could help his dying son. Both parents were together in the same room after a year of separation. The parents couldn’t take being around each other. Yet the last three months in the hospital seem to bring them together for one common cause, their son.

A gasp for air as the boy slowly awakened from his sleep. Upon seeing his parents, he smiled. He looked at his mother and slowly turned and looked at his father. Smiles were exchanged like small gifts which lay under the Christmas tree. He reached out with both of his frail hands. One hand extended to his mother and the other to his father.

“Mother” whispered the boy. “Father” as he motioned with his little fingers. The boy took mom’s hand and his father’s hand and laid it upon his chest and all three were holding hands. “My heart is weak, but my heart is big on love for you” the boy softly spoke. Mom’s eyes swelled and tried to hold back the tears. She knew what was happening and he continued to tell them “I am sorry; my sickness has caused you both such pain and heartache.”

Father busted with emotion, “No, my son you didn’t” and he continued wiping the tear that streamed down his cheek. Both parents were holding hands tightly with their son's hands on top of his chest. Then their son breathed in a deep breath and shared these words. “I love you deeply and I do not want either one of you to be mad at each other anymore after I die.”

Both parents in unison said, “We won’t be.” The boy went on to say, “Mom, I love you and I want you to love dad. Dad, I love you and I want you to love mom.” Squeezing both parents hands, “I want you to be together when I die and I” The boy gasped again, “I love” and from the last word uttered, “you”. Slowly his eyes closed and lying there motionless, he passed into heaven.

The story doesn’t end sadly. The boy’s heart lived on with another and the parents reconciled and had another child. I believe we often forget just how much we need to set aside our differences and come together. There is a reason we have to celebrate life and death.

I believe you and I are similar to the mother and the father in this story. We celebrate this week with such joy and blessing. A Savior was born. As he grew older He was on His death bed. Both arms stretched out, with one to heaven and one to earth. He brought us back to the Father to be reconciled.

It is a joyous time this year to reflect not on the gifts we receive, but the greatest gift of all. Life! We may not see why we are in the mix of a fix, but we can understand the gift of a Savior buying us back from eternal destruction. C.S. Lewis once wrote that, “Nothing will reconcile us to the unnaturalness of death. We know that we were not made for it; we know how it crept into our destiny as an intruder; and we know Who has defeated it.”

Let’s celebrate with each other in the joy of the season, so “have yourself a merry little Christmas”.
